ASHRAE Standard 181-2018 prescribes methods for testing liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers. To meet this objective, the standard lists and defines the terms for rating liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers and establishes testing methods that used as a basis for obtaining ratings of liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers.

This standard  prepared under the auspices of ASHRAE. It may be used, in whole or in part, by an association or government agency with due credit to ASHRAE. Adherence is strictly on a voluntary basis and merely in the interests of obtaining uniform guidelines throughout the industry. This 2018 revision of the standard updates references.

This standard Scope is

  • a. lists and defines the terms for rating the thermal performance of liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers;
  • b. establishes the methods of test used as a basis for obtaining the thermal performance and pressure drop of liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers using water or other single- phase liquids; and
  • c. applies to laboratory testing for purposes of rating heat exchangers within its scope.

Instrument calibration shall be traceable to primary or secondary standards calibrated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) or similar organization. The indicated corrections shall be applied to meet the required error limits given in subsequent sections. Instruments shall be recalibrat on a regular schedule that is appropriate for each instrument, and calibration records shall be maintained.
