Today, compressor type selection seems to depend more on individual preference than on analysis. There are several reasons for this. For one, developments in oil removal equipment have made it possible for systems to deliver low-oil air from lubricated compressors.The reciprocating compressor had been,for long periods of time,the work horse for the power industry because of its wide capacity range, ease of control, and especially its oil-free air delivery

Plant engineers must know what type of compressor they are commissioning, its characteristics and behavior, and the relationship between the machine and system.The manufacturer provides the compressor, not the system. It is the plant engineer’s responsibility to make them work in harmony together, not the manufacturer nor the design engineer.
