Medium Heavy Duty Truck Engines, Fuel & Computerized Management Systems

Medium Heavy Duty Truck Engines, Fuel & Computerized Management Systems Section 1 begins with an introduction to the trucking industry and its technology. This chapter is followed by chapters on tools and safety; study of these is recommended before progressing to actual shop procedures. However, the section is mainly devoted to introducing the diesel engine, beginning with its operating fundamentals and historical development and then examining it on a system-by-system basis. Chapter 14 deals with engine service techniques and is important for the novice technician because it addresses some key entry level skills. Chapter 15 provides some tips on diesel engine disassembly and reassembly procedures, and the final chapter in the section presents engine run-in and dynamometer testing.

The technology addressed in this textbook focuses on principles of operation, the objective being to help the technician understand the systems rather than address the detail of the procedure required to repair them. Some repair detail appears in the e-resource that accompanies this book, but students and technicians should develop the habit of using online service information
systems whenever possible.

The primary objective of this textbook is to provide a basic understanding of the truck diesel engine and its fuel management circuits to the extent required by truck, bus, and also heavy equipment technicians. Much of the book deals with electronically managed engines, but reduced coverage of older hydro-mechanical systems  retained because some mechanically
managed engines are still in operation, especially in off highway applications. In addition, hydro mechanically managed engines remain a secondary requirement of some curriculum and certification task competencies.
