HVAC Systems Applications

HVAC Systems Application manual  developed to present information and data on the application of specific types of HVAC systems -both air and hydronic for the “design and build” SMACNA contractor. The basic types of specific systems  discussed, such as multizone systems, induction air systems, etc., for air; and two-pipe systems, three-pipe systems, etc., for hydronic. Most larger buildings have installations made of combinations of the basic HVAC systems. So in any existing or proposed large building complex, each basic system can be separated and analyzed for its individual contribution to the areas served.

The selection of the type of building environmental or heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system by the designer is one of the most critical decisions . Many factors must  analyzed, but cost of installation and operation is always foremost except in rare circumstances.

When considering the type of system or systems to be selected, it is important to determine whether the building heating and cooling load is mostly sensible or latent, high or low per square foot of conditioned area, uniformly or irregularly distributed within the building spaces, and constant or variable as a regular pattern. All of these factors  involved in a decision such as, “Is it to be a one-zone or a multi-zone system?”. These considerations are necessary for selecting the HVAC systems and their controls which maintain the desired conditions under partial loads. This means controlling the building environment under a broad set of conditions or requirements.
